While the team at KIM+ONO has always been obsessed with adding a little luxury to your everyday, never has adding a bit of comfort and joy been as imperative as this past year. And we know that during the winter months in the northern hemisphere, a little comfort can go a long way. With longer nights, earlier sunsets, colder temperatures, and our overall group effort to stay at home as much as possible during the coronavirus pandemic, that mission to bring something beautiful to each day has never felt more needed. And, for our team who has been working at home as much as possible the past year as well, we also understand the need to wear things that make you feel great — even if you’re not leaving the house.
That’s why this week in the journal, we’re rounding up a handful of kimono styles you can wear at home to feel like your best self during this winter season. These are classic looks that complement every body type and every different kind of day you’re having. Whether you’re hopping into back to back Zoom calls, helping your kids with homework, or laying low for the 100th day in a row — there’s a kimono style for that. So today, we’re helping you discover your own winter kimono style and hope these suggestions will inspire you to find a way to wear your kimono robe that makes you feel as beautiful as you are all winter long.
This is perhaps our favorite winter look. Wearing your kimono robe as a kimono jacket heightens any piece of clothing you already own, and one way to truly uplevel your look at home is to keep it simple. We suggest monochrome colors. This means you can pick a color that matches your kimono robe and mix and match the pieces in your wardrobe easily. We love the color white for winter, so if you have white leggings and a white tank top, you’re all set! You could also pair white leggings with a sweater or even a sweatshirt. Then drape your beautiful kimono jacket over top as the final delicate, silk layer for a monochrome look that plays with textures and fibers.
Of course a kimono robe is the perfect piece to wear with your pajamas. And in fact, simply wearing a kimono cover up over your favorite pajamas can instantly up your lounge game. This winter, instead of getting dressed up for a weekend out, get dressed up for a weekend in! We love pajamas paired with a kimono cover up that play with lengths. If you have a long kimono cover up, wear shorts and a camisole for a dynamic and dreamy lounge look. Let the silk of your kimono robe drape against your legs and wrap you in a little luxury that puts staying at home at the top of your list.
While this year has been a socially distant one, there are still social occasions that we’ve been able to participate in from home. Whether you’re hopping on a Zoom call for work, helping your child navigate at -home distance learning, or catching up with your girlfriends for a Friday night virtual happy hour, a kimono cardigan is a perfect option for feeling put together but still comfortable. We love a simple t-shirt and jeans as a base layer with a kimono cardigan on top. Use one of our kimono wraps to add a little extra velvet trim and a touch of soft charmeuse to your everyday look that makes you feel put together and as special as you truly are.
Have you ever heard of the phrase “dressed up and nowhere to go”? That may be the tagline of this last year, but that’s no reason not to dress up! Bring a little feeling of festivity to your home by turning your kimono robe into a kimono dress. With a pair of high heels and a belt, your favorite bathrobe can turn into a silk kimono dress that makes a night in feel extra delightful. For that matter, it can make the morning feel beautiful as well! Our suggestion? Create a little at-home happy hour for yourself. Pour your favorite cocktail or mocktail, turn on the music you wish they played at your favorite restaurant, have a plate of your favorite finger foods and wear your kimono dress as a way to make staying in even fancier than going out.
And at the end of the day, your kimono style can be as simple as wearing your piece as a women’s bathrobe. Sometimes, simplest is best! Wearing your women’s bathrobe at home during your morning or evening routine — or both! — is a beautiful way to bookend your days. Self care is especially important during the winter months when we’re hibernating at home and spending more time thinking and living inwardly. Giving yourself the softness of silk, and the beautiful designs of botanicals to look forward to every day is one way of reminding yourself that self love is the best love. Wear your women’s bathrobe to get ready for the day and set your intentions to have a wonderful day. Wear your bathrobe at night to create a little space for a nice deep breath and a moment of gratitude. Taking the time this winter to truly build self care into your habits is a practice that gets better and better with time. So start now!
