The Symbolism and Meaning Behind the Handpainted Peacock Kimono Robe

Updated September 3, 2021

We know that each and every time you slip into one of our modern kimono robes, you’re making a statement. The designs and elements used in each one of our handcrafted designs is an extension of your own daily motivation and vision. Your intention is also ours, lovely. We have created this handpainted silk kimono robes with your intentions in mind as well as our own, which is why the meaning behind the peacock is a special one for us. The peacock symbolizes love, good will, nurturing, and a kind heart — all elements you bring to your life every day.

We aren’t only interested in making the most beautiful kimono robes (although, we are very much interested in that!). At KIM+ONO, every hand stitch and every kimono pattern is created and produced with intention. From our seven day handpainting process to our mix of modern and vintage inspired designs, every kimono robe is canvas on which we express not only our aesthetics, but our hopes for you. With so much meaning behind colors, botanicals, and birds, there is a love letter written into each piece we’ve designed.

One of those pieces is our Handpainted Peacock Kimono Robe. This highly decadent piece is one of our fan favorites and it’s easy to see why. With a bold peacock design on the back of the kimono robe and the sweet, gentle cherry blossoms on the front, this modern kimono robe gives you a little bit of everything. Add to that the fact that it’s a handpainted, handcrafted piece on 100% silk, and this piece brings out the elegance, artisanship, and luxury that are signatures of a beautiful kimono robe.

A Meaningful Kimono Pattern

When we designed this kimono robe, we knew we wanted a stand out piece that would make a statement and be grounded in positive symbolism. The peacock's symbolism was the natural foundation of a design like that. One of the most auspicious birds is the peacock. With symbolic roots in a variety of religions and cultures, the peacock has come to stand for immortality — the manifestation of the phoenix rising from the ashes. For us, it also symbolizes love, good will, nurturing, and a kind heart. All enduring qualities that make immortality possible. For a kimono pattern that leaned into this kind of significance, the peacock was the most obvious choice.

The Dynamic Handpainted Peacock of the Long Black Kimono Robe

With a rich vibrant blue against this long black kimono robe, the peacock gently perches on your back. It looks back with in confidence, letting its feathers drape down in a kimono pattern that reveals itself as you turn to walk away. On this long black kimono robe, the cherry blossoms bring a liveliness and softer dimension to the powerful black statement of the silk fabric. A beautiful pairing for this style is to take one of the colors in the kimono pattern for a monochromatic base layer. Taking white, as shown above, is a great way to keep the classic look, but give it a modern update. Our wish for you when wearing this long black kimono robe is that it brings out your own confidence and power by reminding you that a loving, nurturing heart can manifest and cultivate whatever it is you want in your life.

The Gentle Cherry Blossoms on This White Kimono Robe

The strength of the peacock and the elegance of the 100% silk kimono robe is an incredible duo, but we knew for this white kimono robe that we wanted to bring the elements of vintage Asian art into play. We didn’t just want to go for power; we wanted to balance it with the gentleness and contrast of the delicate cherry blossom. Cherry blossoms symbolize renewal, which ties into the immortal goodness of the peacock. As the flower of spring, the cherry blossom represents a time of renewal, as well as calls out to the fleeting nature of the seasons and cycles of life. Here, we give equal opportunity for the peacock and the cherry blossoms to shine, emphasizing the balance of the woman (or man) who wears the piece. We hope this white kimono robe reminds you that you can have both strength and gentleness, power and humility, elegance and groundedness at the same time.
