When co-founders, sisters Renee and Tiffany Tam, designed their kimono robes, they knew that having a kimono robe silk piece from KIM+ONO would be more than just having something beautiful to wear. They dreamed and hoped it would be an invitation to practice self care and intention every single day, even in the small, mundane moments.
So that’s why they poured their heritage and creativity into designing our kimono robes to feel like a work of art. And just like any work of art, our kimono robes need a little extra love to keep them pristine. Think of your kimono robe as more than a robe. It’s truly an heirloom-in-the-making, so how you care for it will shape how it’s able to move with you through your everyday.
Here’s your full guide to keeping your silky robe looking and feeling as exquisite as the day it arrived. Read our expert kimono cleaning tips and storage recommendations below.
1. Launder Correctly: Less Is More
When it comes to washing your kimono robe silk, the only thing we recommend is dry cleaning. For our Handpainted and Printed Silk Collections, take your work of wearable art to the dry cleaner and never get water on it. Silk is a delicate natural fiber that thrives with gentle treatment. You should always follow the care tag instructions carefully — most of our silk robes are dry clean only. Our Washable Silk Collection can be gently laundered at home with mild detergent, cold water, and the delicate cycle. Be careful not to overstuff the washer and always use a delicates bag.
All of our Silk Collections are Grade 6A, which is the highest quality of silk you can find. It’s known for its ultra-long fibers and natural sheen, which give your long silky robe that flowing, luminous look and buttery texture. Washing our Printed or Handpainted Collections at home, especially in water that’s too warm or with harsh detergents, can strip away that glow and weaken the fabric. Our Washable Silk will stand up to at-home washing, and steaming it after it’s hung to dry will bring back its natural luster and shine.
If your robe needs a refresh between cleanings, hang it in a steamy bathroom for a few minutes while you shower — the gentle steam helps release wrinkles and revive its drape. You can also lightly air it out in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. And remember: avoid bleach, avoid wringing, and never toss your robe in the dryer. If you focus on these best practices, you’ll find your kimono robe gets softer and more luxurious over time.

2. Store Safely: Hang, Don’t Hook
It may sound simple, but how you store your kimono robe matters just as much as how you wash it. Always store your long silky robe or plus size duster kimono robe on a padded or wide wooden hanger. The gentle slope of a proper hanger will help the shoulders keep their shape and prevent creases or stretching. Hanging your robe on a hook (even for a short while) can create permanent indentations or pull the silk fibers out of alignment. Our delicate fabrics are very easily pulled, which is why we don’t put a hang tag at the label, to discourage hanging them this way.
Another quick tip: If you’re traveling or rotating your wardrobe seasonally, fold your robe carefully in tissue paper and store it in a breathable cotton garment bag — never plastic. Plastic traps moisture, which can cause discoloration or dull the natural shine of silk.

3. Avoid Rough Surfaces
Your silky robe does not like friction. The delicate weave of silk is easily snagged by jewelry, zippers, rough furniture, or even textured bedding. So, when lounging in your robe, avoid sitting on coarse materials like woven straw or rough wood, and steer clear of abrasive tabletops or Velcro-fastened clothing. If you wear your plus size duster kimono robe over jeans or another textured fabric, make sure it moves freely and doesn’t catch.
4. Handle Gently: Avoid Pulling or Tugging
Every KIM+ONO kimono robe silk piece is hand-inspected and quality checked several times to ensure the highest quality, but silk fibers are also inherently delicate. Pulling or tugging on your robe, especially at the seams or belt loops, can stress the fabric and cause small tears or thread pulls. When tying the belt, use a soft, even tension. Don’t cinch too tightly. If the sash becomes twisted, gently smooth it out rather than yanking it flat. And if your long silky robe ever catches on something, stop immediately, don’t pull. Instead, ease it loose carefully to avoid causing a run in the fabric. It’s also best to avoid applying oily lotions when wearing your kimono robe. Silk is absorbent, which makes it feel luxurious against your skin—but also means it can pick up lotions, perfumes, or cosmetics easily.

5. Treat It Like an Heirloom
Whether you’re wrapping up after a long bath, slipping into your plus size duster kimono robe while journaling in the morning, or using your silk robe as part of your nighttime ritual, each time you wear it is a ritual of self care. Over time, your long silky robe might develop subtle softness or a slightly more lived-in drape. That’s part of its story. Like all heirlooms, it’s meant to carry your memories. You might even pass it on one day — to a daughter, a friend, or someone who reminds you of your best self. Treating it well ensures it lasts long enough to hold that meaning. So, when you store it, wash it, and wear it, do so with reverence. A silk robe that’s cared for properly can last for years, remaining as stunning as the moment you first slipped it on.
At KIM+ONO, we believe that beauty and care are intertwined. Every choice you make, to hang your robe instead of hook it, to steam it gently instead of press it hard, is an expression of love and gratitude for the small, everyday moments of your life. And we think those are the ones worth celebrating.
