Crafting Kimono Robes for a New Generation

Learning from a rich history of traditional Japanese kimonos and the generational philosophy of our family’s business, KIM+ONO has developed our craft to bring the modern kimono robe into everyday life. What we love about tradition, art, and family, we have sought to weave into every piece. So here’s a deeper dive into our craft and how we’re bringing the women’s kimono robe to life right here in San Francisco.

What Is a Kimono?

First of all, let’s define a traditional Japanese kimono, which is the inspiration for all of our kimono robes. A kimono — literally translated as “the thing worn” — is a work of art, a vibrant canvas draped over the wearer that, as history states, is as integral to her persona as her own physical attributes. Inspired by that tradition, our T-shaped kimonos are designed with elegance and function in mind to create classic kimono robes that make for a sophisticated staple to any wardrobe. No matter how you wear it, it elevates your day.

Bringing Art to Life Through Every Kimono Robe

KIM+ONO is a handcrafted kimono company specializing in silk and charmeuse botanical print kimono robes. Each kimono robe features an original kimono pattern, first sketched by hand, then saturated in rich watercolors using a traditional paintbrush. Our pieces draw inspiration from the various styles of traditional Chinese brushwork, capturing the artistic principles of depth, contrast, space, and balance. Many of our kimono patterns feature romantic, tranquil scenes of timeless botanicals that bear significance. For example, the lotus flower symbolizes good luck and fortune, a sentiment we wish to share with our customers.

Making Kimono Robes Generation After Generation

Run by two sisters, our company aims to share an age old tradition with the modern world. Our family has been importing and sourcing traditional products from Asia for four decades. Over the years, we have built wonderful, loyal relationships with our kimono manufacturer in China’s Silk Village. The father and son duo behind our kimono craftsmanship are talented artists who have created or inspired many of our unique kimono patterns. Our guiding principle remains the same across generations: We pair timeless techniques with modern aesthetic to craft beautiful, everyday women’s kimono robes.

Kimono Robes Designed in San Francisco

Our modern kimono robes are designed in San Francisco. Inspired by vintage Asian art and the timeless beauty of botanicals, we work to highlight trending seasonal colors in each of our women’s kimono robes, and choose palettes that compliment various skin tones and complexions. Our creative juices flow best when we unwind to our favorite music, focus on serenity, take deep breaths and allow our minds to be free. We strive to bring a modern sense of balance and groundedness into each modern kimono robe.
