Most of us have at least one piece in our wardrobe that we reach for when we want to feel the most like ourselves. It’s not the piece we bought because it was practical, or the one we grabbed off the sale rack, but the one that just fits the expression of ourselves we feel most aligned with. For a lot of the women in our community, and honestly for us too, that piece is a kimono robe.
What we have always believed about these robes, and what our co-founders, sisters Renee and Tiffany, built KIM+ONO around, is that a kimono robe is not a category of clothing so much as an intentional act of self expression. The traditional Japanese kimono literally translates to "the thing worn," a garment for everyday life, not special occasions. That spirit is alive in every piece we make. And it means the question is never really "where can I wear this?" It is "how do I want to express myself today?"
Here are five ways our community wears theirs, each one a small, intentional expression.

1. With a t-shirt and jeans, to elevate the everyday
Getting dressed can very often feel like simply going through the motions, and most of us know that experience well. The jeans are fine. The t-shirt is fine. The whole look is fine. But the act of layering a kimono duster jacket over that same exact “fine” outfit does something interesting: it takes the pieces you slip into without a second thought and makes them feel like a conscious choice. The beautiful, heritage-rich botanical print pulls the focus while the fluid drape adds elegance to the whole silhouette. Suddenly your outfit feels expressive, and like an elevated version of you.
This t-shirt and jeans combination is one of the most common ways our community styles their robes, and it works because it does not require anything new except the kimono robe itself. Your existing wardrobe is all you need to create the foundation for this wearable work of art.

2. Over an all-black one-piece, to feel confident and powerful
All black bases work for good reason. They create clear lines and a simplified foundation for a more head-turning piece. Draping one of our ladies silk robes over a black one-piece or bodysuit does exactly this: the neutrality of the base lets the robe's design take the spotlight, and the result is an outfit that feels both effortless and like a statement.
We often hear of our community styling their kimono wraps and robes over all black base layers when they’re heading somewhere that calls for a little extra confidence, a lunch where they want to feel sharp, or a special event when they want to stand out. The combination lands every time because the contrast is so visually appealing.

3. As an at-home robe, to turn mundane moments into self care
There is a tendency to keep nice things for only special occasions. You’d be forgiven for falling into the thinking trap that wearing something beautiful needs to be justified by a special occasion. Respectfully and with love, we disagree with that completely.
Our best robes are made to be worn in those everyday moments. Those everyday moments are special occasions. You can slip into your kimono robe at home in the morning before the day starts or in the evening when it finally slows down. The Washable Silk collection, in particular, was designed for exactly this: Grade 6A Mulberry Silk that you can machine wash, soft enough to reach for every single day without thinking twice about the care. When you put on something this luxurious just for yourself, with no “formal” occasion, you are practicing the belief that your life itself is the occasion.

4. With a little black dress, for elegance and softness
A little black dress is a classic choice for so many different circumstances. It is clean, it is versatile, it works. What it sometimes lacks is visual warmth and softness to make your outfit feel like a whole integrated expression rather than a neutral thought.
Layering a long kimono robe over a little black dress adds that kind of expressive beauty to your LBD. The florals introduce a little pop of color while the silk adds another layer of movement and sway. The length gives you a silhouette that feels elegant yet still playful. This is the styling combo we find ourselves recommending most for dinners, celebrations, or any occasion where you want to feel both polished and comfortable. Belt it at the waist to define the shape, or leave it open to let it move, there are truly no wrong ways to style a little black dress with a kimono robe.

5. Poolside, to add a touch of luxury to your escape
A vacation, or even just an afternoon near water, is already a beautiful way to practice rest. These kinds of occasions give you permission to move slower, to be present, and to not rush to the next place to be. The right beach cover up kimono robe amplifies that feeling. It is the thing you reach for when you come out of the water and want to still feel put together.
Our charmeuse and washable silk robes work especially beautifully here because they are lightweight enough to wear in the heat and substantial enough to feel like luxurious self care. And what’s also important on vacation? Your vacation photos! Draped over a swimsuit, tied loosely at the waist, carried over one shoulder as you walk to a chair, the kimono robe at poolside photographs beautifully and it actually feels as good as it looks.
The thread running through all of it
What connects these five looks is not a dress code or an aesthetic. It is simply infusing a little bit more intention into how you get dressed in the morning, or the evening, or for a Tuesday afternoon at home. Slipping into your kimono robe is a deliberate choice that prioritizes you and your own self-expression.
The bottom line is this: the women in our community are juggling a lot and we have always believed that beauty does not have to wait for a special invitation to show up in your life. It can show up on a Wednesday, in your kitchen, before the house wakes up. It can show up poolside on a slow afternoon, or at a dinner where you just wanted to feel like yourself. A single piece, worn with a little intention, can express the beautiful you, you are.
